The Shetland league is designed
to teach the game of baseball to players ages 5-6 who have advanced beyond t-ball but are not yet ready for pinto. The
games will be 3 innings long and are ended either by a limit of 5 runs or 3 outs. The kids will either hit off of a
(1) pitching machine but at a lower speed and closer to home plate or (2) coach pitch with 4 balls maximum. If the ball
is not hit after 4 pitches, the player must hit off of the tee.
Players advance on bases just like
in baseball. There is not a one base per hitter rule as in t-ball.
There can be 2 coaches
on the field to help the players learn defensive positions. Each player will play defense in every inning.
Although
a score will be kept during the inning to monitor the 5 run rule, a cumulative score is not kept and results will not be posted.
The goal is to introduce the idea of competition but not make it the focus.
As this is a new program,
we expect some adjustments the first year so it can be a good playing experience for the kids.
